Ubicomp 2005

Ubicomp 2005, the Seventh International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing, was held in September 11-14 in Tokyo, Japan. Over 600 attendees took part in the workshop sessions, paper presentations and interactive demos.

One of my favourite demos was the Cochira navigation system that helps people find the way around train stations by literally pointing them in the right direction!

Drift Table & History Tablecloth at the V&A

The Drift Table and History Tablecloth formed part of the Touch Me exhibition at the V&A museum, London.

Over 20,000 people visited the exhibition which ran between the 16th June and 29th August.

Ubiquitous Media and Social Infrastructure

I was kindly invited to speak at the Ubiquitous Media and Social Infrastructure International Workshop, organized by the 21st Century Center of Excellence Program, Keio University.

The workshop was held at Stanford University on August 26th, 2005. Presided by Hideyuki Tokuda and chaired by Ikuyo Kaneko, Jun Murai and Hiroaki Chiyokura.

I presented an overview of my work on ad hoc physical interfaces in the Media Communication Design session chaired by Masa Inakage.

The Drift Table was included in A Picture of Britain, an exhibition at Tate Britain, London, running from the 15th June to 4th September 2005.

IEE International Workshop on Intelligent Environments

Organized by the University of Essex (Colcheter, UK) and the IEE Robotics & Mechatronics Professional Network. June 2005.

Presented The Pendle: A personal Mediator for Mixed Intiative Environments in the session entitled Interacting with Intelligent Environments. I also participated in the PhD colloquium which took place at the end of the second day of the workshop.

Collaborative Artefacts and Interactive Furniture

I was invited to participate in the workshop on Collaborative Artefacts and Interactive Furniture, organized by CRAFT and chaired by Pierre Dillenbourg.

The topic of this workshop was the development of furniture that can support collaboration and interaction between students in the new learning centre being built on the EPFL campus in Lausanne.

More than fifty participants attended the workshop, and came from varied backgrounds including architecture, art, interaction design, HCI and ubicomp research.

New Interfaces for Musical Expression

NIME '05 was hosted by the University of British Columbia, Vancouver on May 26-28 2006. Chaired by Sidney Fels (Univeristy of British Columbia) and Tina Blaine (Carnegie Mellon University). The opening keynote speech was given by Don Buchla, and there were invited talks by Bill Buxton and Golan Levin.

I presented a poster (Pin&Play&Perform) alongside a working interactive demo of the technology.

Aerial(Brass)

22nd - 30th October 2004

The Ingot was incorporated into Kirsty's installation "Aerial (Brass)", exhibited as part of the NOW Performance Arts Festival at the Bonnington Gallery, Nottingham.

On the 22nd of October we gave a joint talk with students from the Nottingham Trent art school who came to the opening of the installation.
